On March 23, 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law. Most people just call it the Affordable Care Act, the ACA or Obamacare.

The various federal requirements under this law are commonly referred to as national health care reform. The goals of the Affordable Care Act are to: 

  • Extend health coverage to those without insurance.
  • Protect those with insurance and maintain their rights.
  • Ensure health plans have a basic set of benefits such as prescription drugs, preventive care and more.
  • Address issues with health care costs and make health insurance more affordable.
